It’s five years later and this is still true to this day, but their list of reasons have gotten much longer.
I started this post a while ago (even before “Why is my kid crying”) and whenever I get ready to actually sit and write/post it; my kids inspire me to add to this ever growing list of reasons why they are fighting. Then when I’m ready, there’s a fight or a problem and I just can’t get to it. I’m sure there are hundreds, possibly thousands more, but here is a glimpse into their reasoning.
- One of them let the dog in.
- One of them can run faster.
- We’re reading in someone else’s room tonight.
- The rest of the couch is available.
- My lap is occupied.
- One of them is using the yoga mat.
- Someone has to sit in the “way back”.
- It’s time to go to school.
- Come to think of it, it’s time to go anywhere.
- The TV show that is on
- The chair/spot at the table
- I let them use my computer/tablet/phone.
- Someone’s copying someone.
- Someone won’t give someone a hug.
- Shoes are lost.
- We’re watching a soccer game.
- They’re sitting next to each other.
- My phone rang.
- It’s dinner time.
- HOMEWORK!! !
Too funny! Look at that video. They went from just hanging along to hitting each other. I can substitute Zane and Hayley in here! Your list sounds a lot like mine
Oh let's see what else to add: you looked at me, you touched me, you spoke to me…..HAHAHA
hehehe. let me see what I can add from just yesterday: Maddy saw the grassy area first; you didn't see the deer, I saw the deer; we're breathing the same air. UGH. 😉
This to look forward to…oh dear!
Haha awesome! I remember those days with my brother.
We're expecting our FIRST, so it'll be yeears before I get to "enjoy" these things. I think writing about it makes it a little funnier (what I mean is, you can at least look back and appreciate that it's just darn ridiculous). 🙂
How funny – we get so many fights because "I tried to give so-and-so a hug and she won't let me!" I thought it was just my crazy kiddos 🙂
Love this! I can add from my 5 and 2 yr old "She's not behaving" or "she took my blanket"! It's all normal I guess 🙂
Hahaha I thought the same as well!
Per my parenting experience with three kids, I have to add 21 to the list. Because they’re siblings! BWAHAHAHAHAHA.
Kids, one minute they are fighting and the other helping each other out and playing nice. Blink and it changes. Once our kid said the other was breathing his air.

Haha, yes, I have two kids and they can bicker at times. Mostly over bathroom time. “Get out of the bathroom, you’ve been in there for AGES!”

Haha so funny. I’m ashamed to admit this, but I’m fighting, get mad at my husband for the same level of silliness. So I do understand the kids :))
It is always so distressing when my kids fight and they are so mean to each other at that moment. I always have the hope that they are becoming closer by interracting hopefully in peaceful ways most of the time.

When we were younger my sister and I used to fight over the silliest things (although we still fight over silly thing now that we’ve in our 20s). One of our biggest arguments was when one of us didn’t wait for the other to watch our favorite TV show. We HAD to watch it together.
Oh gosh when I have a second IM sure I will relate to this tons. But it reminded me so much of my sister an I!
Only 20? Surely you can list a lot more – I know I could. Let’s start with splitting a cookie…

Haha. Kids are so funny! My girls are 6 years apart and they fight and argue about everything!

I only have one child, but she fights with her cousins like crazy! Every little thing is starting an argument these days
I can definitely relate to this post. My kids tend to fight over the pettiest issues, like if one of them breathes too loudly or stares at a sibling for too long.

It’s crazy how those fights can seem to come out of nowhere. My siblings and I used to get so mad at each other sometimes!
This is MY life. My kids love to fight about who gets to sit where in the car. It’ll be over soon since everyone is studying to get their license soon. C’est la vie. C’est la vie.

Lol… kids seem to find just about anything to fight about. I love your 20 things they fight about and I am sure you are already able to add more to them. When my husband did daycare in our home for 12 years we had 2 sisters that were in elementary school and had them since they were babies. They kept fighting so one day I made them sit in the same chair and hold hands. It worked for a little bit til one was squeezing “too hard” etc. Sometimes I miss those days, then my granddaughter is here and at 7 everything is so “annoying”. Good times. As long as you can laugh at some point. Great post.
Yep. That sounds about right. My daughter is an only child but I sure have seen this with my nieces and nephews. For that matter, I’ve seen it with my own siblings…even now. LOL
My kids had so many reasons they fought. Sometimes they would just look at each other the wrong way.
Oh my gosh kids seem like a total riot/pain like 24/7 haha they fight over the most trivial things (but then again so do many adults I know!)
Oh yes! The joy of motherhood… the joy of childhood…
We survive as mothers and most importantly, our fighting siblings grow into loving adults that cherish the friendships they have with their siblings.

Ah yes I can make a list of probably a million reasons why my kids fight! lol I have 7 kids with 3 under 3 and the fights are brutal I can imagine it getting only worse!
You forgot: He/she is looking at me.
My all time not-so-favorite thing to hear. Maybe because it is something I heard as a teacher every day!
Ha, having survived 4 kids born within a year including triplets it sounds like both your kids and mine have the same reasons to fight with each other. Such a relief to know we have normal children for sure.

Ugh, this is so true! We have to laugh at it because our sanity depends on us seeing the humor in these kid fights. My kids have had a fight over one child looking out “their window” in the car. Also breathing, one should just stop doing that. Apparently you can breathe wrong. :/

Haha! This sounds like my siblings and I. Everything and anything set us off.
Are they always fighting? I’m sure they’ll get over this phase when they’re older and connive with each other too. It is certainly a task for you to make them like each other.

That video! Totally my brother and I when we were kids! I don’t have any children yet, but man, your list could have been written by my mom about my brother and I. EVERYTHING made us fight. BUT now we are the best of friends!!
Even my toddler is angry when he is on my phone (and that’s bare;y happening)! Technology ruins us when we are young…
My sons were born 20 months apart so their clothes are mostly the same size when they were around 5 years old. The reason they fight? It is because someone wore someone else’s shirt. That is the most common reason – fighting over clothes.
I love this post! LOL!! Kids fight all the time and for the weirdest reasons!!

I think they really compete for attention. They want both to be the favorite. I know that feeling!
Definitely can relate! I’m going to have to totally agree with all of these. Now that my kids are older its super funny to look back and have a good laugh together.
Haha! These are all so true! Love this! Kids fight for the smallest and sometimes funniest reasons.
Love it! I guess siblings fight is a normal thing….If they don’t fight, they are not interacting with each other, that’s when you should worry!

These are some of the reasons kids fight. But you forgot to mention one reason. They many times fight for no reason!
The kids fight about the silliest things and sometimes I just can’t help but find it funny. These are also some of the reasons my kids fight. Lol.
I help out at lunchtime at a Belgian school nearby and there always seems to be drama on the playground. Kids gossip and make fun of each other unnecessarily! It doesn’t help that my Dutch isn’t that great and I find it hard to resolve conflicts haha.
I have noticed that siblings fight even when there is no reason. In some cases I think it’s par for the course considering the close quarters and amount of time they spend in each other’s company.

This is like my kids’ day to day routine. They always fight over any thing. They start and end their days with a fight. It’s like never ending. Can you sense my frustration?! But, I know sooner or later they will get tired of it and will be civil to one another . Lol!
good lord I dont even know if kids know why they fight, all i know is most of the time I want to crawl in a hole when the fighting starts
I swear it is ridiculous what they will fight over! This is a funny list!
My girls fight each other and then my boys fight each other. Usually always over the same silly things. It’s driving me nuts actually. My girls are 10 months apart and seem to fight non-stop!
Yeah, I have all girls, so many arguments from clothes to combs. They recently had an argument about hairstyles: “I had that hairstyle yesterday! You are a copycat” “No you’re a copy cat!” “No you are the copy cat” “Meany!” “Crybaby.” Your list is so hilarious. But they do eventually reconcile and play together in peace. Thanks for sharing.
This is too funny! I love that one of them is that someone won’t hug someone else, such a sibling reaction!
Oh to have a sibling. I fought all the time with mine, but I love them so much!

Oh, I remember when I was young. Me and my brother always fight too. Why? Most of the time, the reason is the tv show. Haha! What I like annoys me and vice versa.

Haha! This is really funny! I can totally relate as my kids’ fight over the most random and non-serious things ever.
LOL at fighting for sitting next to each other. Typical siblings indeed!
These are so funny. My favourite is “They’re sitting next to each other.” – hahaha! Been there! (As one of the perpetrators.)
This is so funny.I have one kid only,so I don’t have such experience at home. But,I remember my childhood days fighting with my brother for such reasons… 🙂
