I Was Tricked Into a Yoga Class

Kraus House Mom

Anyone who knows me, knows why yoga is not for me.

Maizie and Stella like yoga, me...not so much

I went to the gym this morning, after studying the schedule very carefully (I’m known for reading it wrong). At 10:30am a Pilates Mat class was scheduled, Pilates being one of my favorites coupled with the fact I haven’t been to the gym in 5 days catapulted me out of the house in a hurry.

I made it by the skin of my teeth, no time to stop at the locker room…nothing.

I walk in, the lights are already out (why they turn the lights out is a mystery to me, you can’t see what the instructor is doing) but I walked in right behind another lady and it was technically 10:29am, I wasn’t late.

I get an extra mat, lay my mat on top, remove my footwear and get into position. The lady who walked in right as I did asked the instructor “Is this Pilates or yoga? Because I know you teach yoga.” The instructor replied that it was going to be, “Pilates with some yoga poses.”

The class starts out a little slower than a Pilates class, so I’m thinking (hoping) it will pick up soon.

Every move we do she wants us to hold for 3 deep breaths. I don’t know what kind of free diving breathing techniques they use in yoga, but I don’t use them in my everyday life, so her 3 deep breaths were equivalent to about 6 or 7 of mine.

I didn’t have a problem getting into and holding the poses, which surprised me, but having the attention span of a 2 year old that just ate her entire Trick or Treat haul, my mind kept wandering and I would lean and/or fall over.

When I go to the gym I like to break a sweat, I don’t go there to relax. If I wanted to relax, I’d go to the beach or go get my nails done.

For the entire hour, I did not sweat once, I did not feel the “burn” and I felt like it was a complete waste of my time, I was tricked.

Needless to say, today’s class felt like an epic fail to me. And top it off; I left class with a banging headache.

If you enjoy yoga, God bless you, it’s is definitely not for me.

  1. Were you sore the next day? I felt like this during the one yoga class I took as well… until the next day when I was sore in different places than my usual workouts.

  2. You would be surprised at how quickly you can slim down with yoga. It is not so much a break a sweat kind of workout, but one that you have to practice core control and making your muscles hold, which actually burns more calories longer than getting a sweaty workout on. Yoga is one of my favorite classes!

  3. I wasn’t a big fan of yoga at first. I was like you – I thought I needed to really SWEAT in order to get a good workout. But, boy oh boy, I was wrong. Yoga has made me more tone and I have sweat BUCKETS in one of my favorite classes.
I think a lot of it has to do with the instructor and the type of yoga.

  4. Ha, ha, ha… I am the same way. I can never sit still long enough for yoga. My mind is always going and I just can’t seem to relax enough. I just don’t have the time for that, LOL

  5. I have never taken a yoga class, but there are some people that find it super relaxing. I am not sure that I would be one of those people.

  6. Yoga has always been of interest to me. It is a little humorous that you got tricked into a class, but so sorry at the same time.

  7. Oddly enough, I prefer yoga to Pilates. Pilates is little to fast pace for me while yoga is so mellow and go with the flow. To each its own when it comes to exercise I guess.

  8. Finally!! Someone else who admits that yoga is just not for them!!i feel exactly the same–the few times I’ve been in a class I find myself bored and itching to MOVE! you are not alone in your feelings!

  9. Hahaha! Love the honest post! I like a good sweaty workout better too. Although I think I could benefit from some good stretches. Keep it up!

  10. I agree with you on Yoga–it has never been for me–my body has never been that flexible! Actually you can’t get me to a gym anymore either–I ended up in Physical therapy for my shoulder for 6 months after the last try—and my shoulder has never been the same!

  11. I tried yoga the other day and it wasn’t really my thing. I would much rather head out for a run or something. My body isn’t right for yoga.

  12. I ave always wanted to try Yoga. I was under the impression it was a workout. If you did not break a sweat maybe it is not for me either.

  13. I definitely don’t feel invigorated doing yoga, so I go to the 7:30pm class and it’s a great way to relax after a stressful day, stretch muscles and get ready for bed 🙂

  14. I’ve actually never tried Yoga, or Pilates! I did an aerobic class once, which didn’t really leave me feeling like I had a good work out, but it was definitely relaxing!

I’ll have to try both some time.

  15. Yoga is not for everyone if he/she can’t promise to do it. I had a lot of problems when I started. Now, It’s okay for me. I am going to love yoga day by day. I am okay with your decision. Don’t go against your mind and it’s important.
