I’ve Got What? I’m Not Old Enough!

I had a check up at the doctor a few weeks ago, no big woop.

I mentioned I keep having these insane headaches that start at the back of my head and then make my head feel like it’s going to explode. It even hurts to blink.

Waiting for him to tell me I was most likely stroking out and brains would end up all over my walls, so stock up on cleaners and scrubby sponges; he threw me a curve ball.

He sent me for an x-ray to see if it’s…arthritis. Really? Arthritis? Am I THAT old?

Guess what? Apparently I AM that old. I have arthritis is my neck. Lucky me.

Now my doctor is big into trying physical therapy for aches and pains.

He sent me for my back a few years ago and it helped a lot. (I don’t even think I was 40 back then.)

Then he wanted me to go for bursitis in my shoulder, I didn’t. That was too close to “living in the home” old for me (my grandparents had that). Not to mention that my husband was going for a shoulder injury and his therapist was torturing him, no thank you. So I toughed it out.

I made the appointment for PT, mainly because I can’t stand the headaches.

There’s nothing like going into a medical office thinking you’re doing pretty well, then realizing, “Man, I’m just a hot mess.”

Withing three minutes of being in the room, I came to understand what a hot mess my neck really is. I could barely move it, thank goodness the therapist pointed all this out. Talk about destroying self esteem. I though I was young and vibrant, that bubble burst.

So after an exam and a painful, yet relaxing neck rub I was sent home with exercises, a bruised ego and 4 more weeks of appointments.

It sucks to be over 40.

  1. Hahaha, you don’t have to be old to have arthritis. My sister has had it since she was about 20.

  2. I do have more aches and pains since hitting 50 – mostly since I hurt my back and have been dealing with a herniated disc. Thankfully, the physical therapy has helped tremendously. I almost feel like I’m 40 again. 🙂

  3. Last year I started getting tension headaches and I had to do PT. I still get them from time to time. I wonder if I have arthritis in my neck too.

  4. Well, I figure being 40 beats the alternative of being 6 feet down! 😉 PT is a huge help for a variety of injuries and maladies. It’s a lot of work, but you usually get out of it what you put in.

  5. Even though I’m only 24, arthritis run-in my family so that’s something I definitely have to be on the lookout for. I once knew someone who was in their 20s who had it so age doesn’t matter.

  6. Arthritis seems like it happens to everyone these days. I actually have degenerative disc disease in my neck. I do NOT feel old enough for that!

  7. Wow, I am sorry to hear this, but I am betting you will be okay. Keep up a positive attitude and do all that you have to do.Aging does kinda stink especially when we feel so young in our minds/hearts.

  8. I had no idea you could get it in your neck and it would feel that way! I am headed to a Dr next week for my aches!

  9. I hope these appointments can help you feel better. I have a few friends with Arthritis and they are around 40 as well. We joke that after 40 you start to fall apart.

  10. I had no idea headaches could be caused by Arthritis in your neck. I hope you are able to get further relief with the PT.

  11. It was good of you to share this information. So often we do not realize how many diseases and illnesses that we are potentially afflicted with until it is too late. This will help people.

  12. I will be 40 next year so I guess I have even more aches and pains to look forward to. My neck and back are constantly giving me problems. I need to go for pt but I have been putting it off.

  13. I to have arthritis in my neck and shoulder problems along with fibromyalgia. Sometimes I get the headaches you were describing along with migraines. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  14. This is actually quite scary considering I feel some aches and pains in my bones at 31. I hate getting older, but at least there are more ways to cope with certain ailments these days.

  15. Aw, I hope you’re finding some comfort with your arthritis! I know it can happen when you’re younger too though, so don’t worry! : )
